Long Queues for Diesel in Gresik and Surabaya, Truck Drivers Wait All Day
Long lines of vehicles, especially trucks, formed at several gas stations in Gresik and Surabaya on Thursday (6/25). Drivers were scrambling for diesel, which is getting harder to come by, with queues snaking around the Margomulyo gas station in Surabaya, along the MERR road, all the way to Raya Bambe in Gresik.
Agus, a truck driver at the Raya Bambe gas station in Gresik, said he’d been waiting for over an hour without moving. He mentioned this has been going on for the past week and is getting more worrying, with wait times possibly stretching to a full day.
The main cause is a 1.2 percent cut in the diesel quota from the original total allocation of 18 million kiloliters, which often leaves gas stations empty before the next refill schedule. The strict quota system means stations can't add supply even when demand spikes.
This scarcity has disrupted logistics distribution in East Java by about 30 percent because many drivers delay their trips. Agus stressed that price subsidies mean nothing without guaranteed availability and distribution, and he hopes the government will quickly reevaluate the distribution scheme for subsidized fuel.
