June 19: International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
Every June 19, the world marks the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2015 through Resolution A/RES/69/293, picking June 19 to remember UN Security Council Resolution 1820 (2008) which condemned the use of sexual violence as a tactic of war.
The UN says conflict-related sexual violence is a war crime, a crime against humanity, and can be part of genocide. But lots of cases go undocumented because of fear, threats, and social stigma. It's estimated that for every one case reported, many more remain unrecorded.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, during the 2025 commemoration, stressed that sexual violence is a heinous tactic with intergenerational effects. He called for stronger prevention, survivor recovery, and enforcement of justice.
This day reminds us that victims and survivors have the right to justice, protection, and recovery support, and that perpetrators must be held legally accountable. The world is urged not to close its eyes to their suffering.
