Indonesia and Malaysia Ramp Up Pressure on Israel, Al-Aqsa Mosque a Top Agenda
Indonesia and Malaysia have doubled down on their rejection of Israel’s illegal actions in Palestine, including East Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, during a ministerial-level meeting in Amman, Jordan. Both countries reaffirmed their support for Palestinian statehood and the protection of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
Indonesia’s Vice Foreign Minister, Arrmanatha Nasir, urged the international community to ditch its fragmented responses and step up joint action based on international law. Indonesia laid out five concrete steps: build a shared strategy, enforce international law and International Court of Justice rulings, broaden recognition of the State of Palestine, strengthen protection for the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and back Gaza reconstruction, Palestinian national unity, and UNRWA’s mandate.
Indonesia stressed the importance of safeguarding Al-Aqsa and supports Jordan’s Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem’s holy sites. Malaysia is on the same page, rejecting any changes to Jerusalem’s legal, historical, demographic, or religious status, and backing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. The meeting produced a joint statement supporting the strengthening of Palestinian institutions in Jerusalem and opposing unilateral moves, including the relocation of diplomatic missions to Jerusalem.
