Guidance on Strengthening Faith

Assalamu alaikum! I've been thinking about how to better understand Islam so I'm not swayed by what others say and can explain it well. My friend thinks I'm just a cultural Muslim who doesn't truly believe or practice. How do you handle people like that? Also, any book recommendations to deepen my knowledge?
