Guarding Our Words: The Tongue's Power in Islam

Salam alaikum everyone! Just a reminder about how crucial it is to watch what we say. Abu Hurayrah shared that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us: if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day, speak kindly or stay quiet [Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah]. Sahl ibn Sa'd also narrated that the Prophet ﷺ promised Jannah to whoever guards their tongue and private parts [Bukhari, Muslim]. And Sufyan ibn ‘Abdillah Ath Thaqafi once asked what Rasulullah ﷺ feared most for him, and he held his own tongue and said, "This" [Tirmidhi]. Plus, ‘Ubadah ibn Samit reported that speaking good brings reward, while staying silent from evil keeps you safe [Mustadrak Hakim, Al Mu’jamul Kabir]. Ibn Mas'ud joked that nothing needs a longer jail sentence than the tongue [Al Mu’jamul Kabir], and Hasan Al Basri beautifully explained that the wise person's tongue follows their heart-thinking before speaking-unlike the fool who blurts out whatever comes [Shu’abul Iman, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah]. Let's all strive to speak only what's beneficial insha'Allah.
