Death Toll from Venezuela Earthquake Reaches 164
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez stated that the death toll from the earthquake in Venezuela has reached 164, with 971 others injured. The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes struck the North Caribbean coast on Wednesday night, making it the most powerful in over 100 years.
Rodriguez declared a national state of emergency after the quake caused widespread damage and triggered a tsunami warning. The main focus now is rescuing victims trapped in collapsed buildings.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates a 42 percent chance that the death toll could reach 10,000 to 100,000, with La Guaira as the hardest-hit area. Authorities are continuing rescue efforts.
