Dealing with cleaning OCD or any OCD type? Getting support matters.
Assalamu Alaikum. My mom, who's elderly and in delicate health, has had intense OCD since I was little; I'm now in my twenties. Her condition hasn't gotten better-it's actually grown more severe. Due to her OCD, she sometimes skips her insulin, worried that any bleeding would mean she has to perform ghusl, and this has caused major health setbacks. She's been in the hospital repeatedly for infections, burns, vein issues, and now eye trouble. With diabetes and other factors, bleeding occurred in her left eye, and she lost sight in it. Please make sincere dua that her vision is restored. Lately, her other eye was impacted too, and doctors said diabetes harmed her retina and membranes. Even with all this, she'll still clean for hours-sometimes over 3 hours for a bath, lengthy times in the bathroom, and washing her hands excessively for close to an hour. Our family is drained. My brother has high blood pressure, my dad has heart concerns, and I face my own mental and physical health struggles. We're always anxious about her and fear we might lose her. May Allah safeguard her and pardon us for such thoughts, but things have become incredibly tough. She tried medicine but didn't stick with therapy properly. Meds alone won't fix OCD without working on behaviors too-I have OCD myself, so I know how challenging it is. I'm sharing this out of deep worry and hurt. Please make dua for my mother's well-being and for ease for our family. We really don't want to lose her.
