Civil Society Coalition Demands an End to the Militarization of Civilian Spaces
BANDA ACEH – The Civil Society Coalition for Security Sector Reform extends its condolences over the death of five prospective managers of the Red and White Village Cooperative (KDMP) during basic military training. This tragedy is seen as a consequence of misguided policies that force military approaches into civilian spheres without a clear basis.
The coalition asserts that military training is irrelevant to cooperative management. The competencies of cooperative managers are built through organizational governance, participatory leadership, accountability, financial literacy, and community empowerment, not military drills. The involvement of the Indonesian military in the KDMP program is considered inappropriate and contrary to the spirit of security sector reform.
This policy is also seen as expanding the practice of militarizing civilian spaces and has the potential to erode democratic values. The military environment, built on principles of command and hierarchy, differs from the needs of civilian organizations that require critical thinking, dialogue, and participatory decision-making.
The militaristic approach is feared to breed authoritarian leadership patterns and erode a healthy and democratic organizational culture, thus failing to produce professional cooperative managers.
