BI Strengthens Sharia Economy Through Pesantrens and Productive Waqf, This New Program Takes the Spotlight
Bank Indonesia (BI) keeps pushing for the development of the sharia economy and finance (eksyar) as a new source of growth in the regions. This commitment was reinforced at the Sumatra Sharia Economy Festival (FESyar) 2026 in Palembang, held to promote inclusive and sustainable growth.
BI Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti stated that eksyar is a key pillar of national economic growth and resilience. Three flagship programs were introduced: Pesantren Sejahtera Terakselerasi (Pesat) to empower Islamic boarding schools, Upaya Nasionalisasi Gerakan Wakaf untuk Komoditas Unggulan (Unggul) to optimize productive waqf, and Bina dan Percepat Sertifikasi Halal untuk Pariwisata (Berkah) to boost the competitiveness of the halal industry.
BI data shows the national halal supply chain sector grew 6.21% (yoy) in 2025, and sharia financing rose 10.84% (yoy) as of April 2026 with a low credit risk of 2.28%. South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru emphasized the region's huge potential with 97.22% Muslim population, 670 pesantrens, and 27 thousand halal-certified products.
