As-salamu alaykum - the international expert forum "Russia - the Middle East" has kicked off in Moscow
As-salamu alaykum. An international expert forum "Russia - the Middle East" has begun in Moscow, TASS reports. The event is taking place in the capital for the fifth time, and participants will discuss sustainable models of cooperation with countries of the region, taking into account common development trends and major challenges.
From October 20 to 22, the forum will host meetings of experts from Russia’s academic and political circles and from Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, the UAE, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Syria and Kuwait.
In his welcoming remarks, Vasily Kuznetsov, deputy head of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences for research, outlined problem nodes that largely shape the current agenda of the region and will determine its near future.
According to him, these include the role of external actors and at least three subregional cases: Iran’s changing role, the Palestine issue, and, of course, the situation in Syria.
Kuznetsov also noted that, despite the enthusiastic reaction in some quarters to the "peace summit" held in Sharm el-Sheikh, it did not actually solve the key problems of Palestine, and the events the world has seen in recent days confirm that these issues remain unresolved.
