AI Cannot Replace Teachers, There's a Threat of Losing the Chain of Knowledge Transmission
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) is seen as unable to replace the role of teachers, ustaz, and kiai in Islamic education. This came up during the 8th Pre-Congress of Indonesian Muslims (KUII) held by MUI's Commission D. The Secretary of the Directorate General of Islamic Education at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Arskal Salim, stressed that AI can only transfer knowledge, not values, morals, and exemplary conduct that are hallmarks of Islamic education. "Teachers, ustaz, and kiai do not just deliver knowledge, but also instill morals, adab, exemplary behavior, and build spiritual relationships with students. This space cannot be taken over by AI," he said.
Arskal warned that the biggest threat of AI is the reduced teacher-student interaction that could weaken the tradition of sanad keilmuan-the chain of knowledge transmission as well as character building. For this reason, the Ministry of Religious Affairs is prioritizing strengthening teacher capacity through digital literacy training and AI competency, as well as integrating an AI curriculum based on Islamic values, including digital ethics and adab in using media.
Kartini, the head of MUI's Education and Cadreization Commission, added that Golden Indonesia 2045 requires a generation that is innovative in science but still holds onto divine values. This forum emphasized that Islamic education must ensure AI becomes a partner, not a replacement, and maintain the continuity of sanad, exemplary conduct, and moral formation.
