3 Sources of Sin in Islam That Muslims Often Overlook
A great scholar from Damascus, Ibnul Qayyim Al Jauziyah, categorized three sources of sin that Muslims often don't realize, which are arrogance (al-kibr), greed (al-hirsh), and envy (hasad). Arrogance, as shown by the devil, means rejecting the truth and looking down on people, and it can keep someone from paradise. Greed or covetousness makes a person never satisfied until death comes, like the story of three greedy young men in the time of Prophet Jesus AS. Envy, which is feeling unhappy about others' blessings, can wipe out good deeds, as in the story of Qabil and Habil.
Various sinful acts stem from these three traits, like corruption, usury, and online gambling from greed; slander and backbiting from envy; and belittling others from arrogance. Such sins bring bad effects like corrupting the heart, blocking sustenance, ruining social relationships, and even incurring Allah SWT's punishment. To avoid them, Muslims are encouraged to practice self-reflection, draw closer to Allah SWT, strengthen patience, and keep busy with positive activities.
