Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar stressed the commitment to expand social employment security protection for madrasah teachers, education staff, pesantren (Islamic boarding school) teachers, mosque imams, and even muezzins. This was conveyed when receiving the board of directors of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (the Social Security Administering Body for Employment) during the symbolic handover of compensation and membership cards.
The Minister considers that workers in the education and religious service sectors have strategic roles with work risks that require state protection. "Madrasah teachers, Quranic recitation teachers, imams, muezzins, and education staff also face risks of work accidents and need social protection guarantees," he said.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs will encourage regional governments to also fund protection premiums for religious workers according to their authority. The Minister emphasized the importance of public awareness about insurance, considering that the cost of protection is relatively small compared to its benefits, including for the continuity of religious services and the education of future generations.
Apart from worker protection, the Minister opened up opportunities to strengthen the protection of state assets within the Ministry of Religious Affairs through insurance schemes, as part of the synergy with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.
