Who Is Attending the Peace Summit in Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh? Salam and Updates
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh! On Monday, a significant Summit for Peace is being held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, bringing together over 20 leaders from the Middle East, Europe, and Asia to support an end to the conflict in Gaza following a new ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi will be chairing this important gathering.
Though Israel and Hamas have no direct communication and are not expected to attend, many key figures are present. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be there due to a Jewish holiday starting Monday. Leaders attending include Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim, both of whose countries, along with Egypt and the US, have been mediators in the ceasefire efforts. King Abdullah II of Jordan is also attending; Jordan and Egypt are involved in training Palestinian security forces for Gaza.
The UAE, known for its generous humanitarian aid to Gaza during the conflict, is sending a delegation led by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Bahrain’s King Hamad, Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al Abdullah Al Sabah, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani are also participating in the summit.
Representing international organizations, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and European Council President Antonio Costa will attend. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has expressed concerns about the conflict, is present as well. The UK and France, both critical of the war’s developments, are sending Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Emmanuel Macron. Starmer has pledged funds to improve water and sanitation in Gaza and announced a conference for Gaza’s reconstruction.
Other European leaders joining include Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Greece’s Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Armenia’s Nikol Pashinyan, Hungary’s Viktor Orban, and Norway’s Jonas Gahr Støre. Leaders from Canada, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, and Pakistan also plan to attend.
Sharm El Sheikh, while known for its beautiful resorts, has a history of hosting peace talks between Israel and Palestine as well as other international conferences. This is the first peace summit held there under President El Sisi's leadership since 2014. The Sinai Peninsula, where Sharm El Sheikh is located, has a complex history involving occupation and peace treaties.
May Allah (SWT) guide all efforts towards lasting peace and justice for the people of Gaza and the region as a whole. Ameen.
