We should call out promotion of racism, even from creators we follow
As-salamu alaykum - I want to say something about a creator who gives a platform to people who are racist toward Black people. He sometimes tries to dismiss criticism by saying he is Black himself, as if that makes everything okay. That doesn’t excuse it. He’s friendly with and supports openly racist figures, and yet during Ramadan he’ll be seen with Muslim creators, doing dawah and talking about faith. Then he’ll also host white supremacist voices. He has a young male audience, maybe around 13–20, and many of them are Muslim. I worry he could lead impressionable young Muslims toward racist ideas under the cover of so-called “race realism.” What’s particularly upsetting is how quiet much of the Muslim creator community has been. For a group that talks about justice, accountability, and opposing oppression, the silence is disappointing - especially from those who have given him a platform before. I can only think of one person who spoke up seriously. Speaking out against anti-Black racism shouldn’t be controversial. Calling out someone for associating with white nationalists isn’t mere “fitnah” or drama - ignoring it may be the greater moral failing. We can critique Western ideas, liberalism, or aspects of modern culture without trampling on Black people or legitimizing racists. Let’s hold people accountable and protect younger Muslims from harmful, hateful ideologies.
