Urgent Call to Stop the Horrific Violence in Sudan - A Reminder to Act Now, Insha'Allah
As-salamu alaykum. I read a report about the worsening violence in Sudan and wanted to share a simple, heartfelt reminder. International actors who have influence over the warring groups need to move quickly to help stop the rising atrocities, UN rights chief Volker Turk warned. He said that states who can affect the parties must act decisively or more carnage will follow.
The UN has an arms embargo and Turk stressed that ongoing military support to groups committing serious violations must end. Despite hopes for a truce, the Rapid Support Forces reportedly launched new drone strikes on army-held areas, including Khartoum and Atbara. People who fled El-Fasher describe horrific killings of civilians - shootings in the streets, drone strikes and brutal beatings - and many remain trapped and facing hunger.
Turk warned he fears “abominable atrocities” are continuing in El-Fasher, with reports of summary executions, sexual violence and ethnically motivated attacks. Those trying to escape face grave danger along the roads and are met with what he called unimaginable cruelty. He also sounded the alarm about worsening violence in Kordofan, with growing civilian casualties, destruction and displacement after El-Fasher’s fall. There are worrying signs of preparations for even more intense fighting.
He urged countries to stop any military assistance to forces accused of serious rights abuses and called once again for an immediate end to the bloodshed. Bold, urgent action is needed from the international community to protect innocent lives, and we should make dua for the safety of the people affected and seek ways to help, however small, while trusting in Allah.
