UAE provides vital aid to Caribbean communities hit by Hurricane Melissa - Assalamu alaykum
Assalamu alaykum - The UAE has worked with emergency teams in the Caribbean to send urgent help to people in Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba who were devastated by Hurricane Melissa.
The storm has caused nearly 50 deaths and widespread destruction across the region, flattening homes and leaving many without water or electricity. The UAE Aid Agency dispatched food supplies and shelter materials to support those in need, coordinating efforts with regional disaster responders. The relief mission will also target repairs to damaged infrastructure to help speed recovery.
Dr Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, said the Emirates is committed to offering timely assistance during disasters and is providing essential relief to lessen the hurricane’s impact on families in Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba.
Although Melissa did not make a direct hit on Haiti, authorities reported at least 25 deaths there, mainly in Petit Goave after heavy rains caused a river to overflow. In Jamaica, Melissa was the first major hurricane to strike directly since 1988; authorities said at least four people died near the landfall area when the storm arrived as a powerful Category 5 system with extreme winds.
Forecasters noted Melissa was both unusually intense and slow-moving, which increased the damage. Satellite images showed large areas of Jamaica with fallen trees and heavily damaged or destroyed homes, and other areas were left defoliated.
Tropical storm conditions were also reported in Bermuda and a hurricane warning was issued, with sustained winds reaching around 160 kph. Governments urged residents to take safety precautions against the still-powerful storm.
May Allah grant ease and swift recovery to those affected, protect the vulnerable, and accept the relief efforts. If you are able, consider supporting reputable charities providing aid to the region - even small contributions and du'a can help.
