Through Various Educational Programs, Banyuwangi Gets 3,259 Out-of-School Children Back in Class
The Banyuwangi Regency Government has managed to bring back 3,259 out-of-school children to the classroom through various aid and mentoring programs since 2023. This effort ensures all kids get their right to education up to high school level or equivalent.
Banyuwangi Regent, Ipuk Fiestiandani, expressed the region's commitment to preventing dropouts with help like school supplies, pocket money, equivalency education, and mentoring. "For us, no child should lose the chance to get an education, no matter the issue," said Ipuk.
One of the main programs is Rintisan Desa Tuntas Wajib Belajar 12 Tahun (Rindu Bulan), which involves village governments, schools, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and Baznas to track and bring back out-of-school children into formal or equivalency education. Acting Head of the Banyuwangi Education Office, Alfian, explained that the mentoring starts with data verification and home visits to figure out the right kind of help.
On top of that, the Siswa Asuh Sebaya (SAS) program encourages students to set aside some pocket money to help less fortunate classmates, like giving bikes, glasses, school stuff, and pocket money. This movement builds empathy while acting as a social safety net within the school environment.
