The Upcoming Release of Palestinian Prisoners in the Israel-Hamas Agreement, Insha'Allah
As-Salamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. With the hopeful release of 20 hostages soon, possibly as early as Sunday, there is also news about around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners who will be freed in exchange. Among these, Israel faces a tough decision concerning 250 'security prisoners'-a label for those convicted on charges related to terrorism. Opposition to freeing these prisoners is strong, especially from right-wing groups and families of Israelis affected by attacks.
Israeli security agencies have a role in deciding who is too risky to release. After releasing these 250, about 40 prisoners will remain, many of whom are well-known. The rest of the prisoners, mainly from Gaza, were detained after the conflict escalated.
Last-minute talks took place between mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and the US with Israeli officials, aiming to free some high-profile Palestinians, including Marwan Al Barghouti, a respected leader in the Palestinian community often seen as a potential future leader of the Palestinian Authority. However, Israel remains firm on not releasing these six key figures.
Most of the prisoners to be released are affiliated with Fatah and Hamas. Fifteen hold Israeli citizenship, while the others come from the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem, and even abroad. Many will be deported after release.
Some notable names include Maher Abu Srour, convicted of killing an Israeli intelligence informant; Riyad Al Amur, serving multiple life sentences; Mahmoud Al Arda, known for orchestrating a major prison escape; and Basem Khandakji, a writer and prisoner linked with the PFLP. Others include commanders and individuals involved in past attacks, all with complex stories tied to the ongoing conflict.
May Allah grant ease and justice to all affected by this difficult situation, and may peace and mercy prevail for all parties involved. Ameen.
