The Ministry of Religious Affairs' Isbat Session for Determining the Start of Zulhijah 1447 AH and Eid al-Adha 2026 to be Held This Week
The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold an isbat session to determine the start of Zulhijah 1447 AH and the Eid al-Adha 2026 holiday on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The session will take place at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium in Jakarta and will involve various parties, including the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, the Indonesian Ulema Council, ambassadors from friendly countries, BMKG (the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency), the Geospatial Information Agency, as well as Islamic organizations and astronomy experts.
In parallel, moon sighting (rukyatul hilal) observations will be conducted simultaneously at 88 strategic points across Indonesia, from Aceh to West Papua. According to astronomical calculation data, the conjunction preceding Zulhijah is estimated to occur on May 17, 2026, at around 03:00:55 WIB, with the position of the new moon crescent above the horizon across all regions of Indonesia.
This isbat session forum aims to combine the results of astronomical calculations and moon sighting to produce an accurate, scientifically-based determination for the start of Zulhijah that can be accepted by all Indonesian Muslims. The session's decision will serve as the national reference for determining the timing of Eid al-Adha worship.
