Syrian Foreign Ministry says US base plans in Damascus report are false - As-salamu alaykum
As-salamu alaykum. Syria’s Foreign Ministry has rejected a report that said the US plans to set up a military presence at an airbase in Damascus.
A news agency had claimed Washington was preparing to use the capital’s airbase to help oversee a proposed security arrangement between Syria and Israel, saying the base would be near the southern approaches that might become a demilitarised zone under a US-brokered non‑aggression understanding. The report cited several unnamed sources.
On Thursday a ministry official, speaking to state media, called the story "false" and said the US is now shifting toward direct engagement with Syria’s central government, supporting efforts to preserve the country’s unity and rejecting calls for partition. “Syria is moving forward to strengthen stability and cooperation based on national sovereignty and mutual respect,” the source added.
The articles also mentioned an expected visit by Syrian President Ahmad Al Shara to Washington on November 10, described as the first trip by a Syrian head of state to the White House in decades. US officials said the meeting is part of an effort to pursue peace in the region. Syrian leaders say discussions will focus on post‑war reconstruction and lifting sanctions.
Separately, the UN Security Council recently removed sanctions on Mr Al Shara and on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab, after months of debate following a US policy shift toward Syria earlier in the year. The US president praised the Syrian leader during comments about progress and changes in the region.
Please forgive any blunt phrasing - I’m just sharing what I read and wanted to pass it on for anyone interested in these developments.
