Praise be to Allah - King Faisal Specialist Hospital carries out world’s first robotic brain tumor removal
As-salamu alaykum - RIYADH: In a remarkable medical milestone, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh has completed the world’s first robotic intracranial tumor resection. This breakthrough raises the bar for precision and recovery in neurosurgery, alhamdulillah.
Surgeons used robotic arms to remove a 4.5-centimeter brain tumor from a 68-year-old man who had been suffering severe headaches and trouble concentrating. Remarkably, the patient went home fully conscious within 24 hours - a recovery time nearly four times faster than with traditional open brain surgery, by all accounts.
Dr. Homoud Al-Dahash, consultant for skull base tumors and the lead surgeon, said the robotic system gave the team outstanding precision and control, allowing them to work around delicate blood vessels and nerves with great care. “The patient’s same-day discharge, fully conscious and without complications, sets a new standard for neurosurgical care,” he noted.
Using a 3D optical guidance system, the roughly one-hour operation gave surgeons a clear, magnified view of the brain. Advanced image-guided navigation helped remove the tumor accurately while protecting vital brain areas.
KFSHRC CEO Dr. Majid Al-Fayyadh linked the success to the hospital’s ongoing transformation efforts. “This achievement shows KFSHRC’s growing role in shaping the future of medicine. It fits our vision of combining innovation with patient-centered care,” he said.
Before robotic techniques, such procedures relied on manual removal under a surgical microscope, where outcomes depended heavily on human steadiness and visibility. Robotic platforms now add instrument stability, tremor reduction, and improved visualization - raising safety and precision standards in neurosurgery.
This landmark operation joins KFSHRC’s earlier robotic milestones, like the robotic heart and liver procedures that brought international recognition and strengthened the hospital’s reputation in minimally invasive surgery.
KFSHRC has earned top regional rankings and notable global recognition for its work. May Allah grant continued success to the medical teams and speedy recovery to all patients.
