Pakistan welcomes Syria’s post-Assad parliamentary vote, calls out Israeli forces
Assalamu alaykum - Pakistan on Wednesday welcomed Syria’s recent parliamentary vote, calling it an important step in the country’s political transition, and criticized Israel’s continued military presence along the ceasefire line.
Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, said the indirect elections for 140 parliamentary seats on 5 October 2025 marked a meaningful move toward restoring state institutions and greater political engagement. He expressed hope that areas which faced delays because of security problems will be able to take part soon so the process is more inclusive.
Jadoon also noted an agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the central government to integrate SDF units into Syria’s national army, calling this a positive step for national unity and rebuilding unified institutions. He urged the international community to ease sanctions to help Syria recover economically and support reconstruction and reintegration, and welcomed recent steps by some countries to lift restrictions and contribute to rebuilding efforts.
At the same time, he strongly condemned what he described as repeated violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement by Israeli forces, saying their continued positions on the Syrian side of the ceasefire line undermine efforts to protect Syria’s unity and stability. Jadoon stressed that any new security arrangements should have the consent of the parties directly involved.
May Allah grant peace and stability to the people of Syria and help the region move toward justice and reconstruction.
