Observer Says PGR Is Starting to Use Anies Baswedan as a ‘Political Commodity’ for 2029

The People’s Movement Party (PGR), a new party gearing up for the 2029 elections, is seen as starting to treat Anies Baswedan as a ‘political commodity’. KUHP observer Damai Hari Lubis says that after the Constitutional Court’s decision to scrap the presidential nomination threshold, PGR has a chance to nominate Anies if it passes KPU verification. Damai reckons Anies’s status in PGR as an inspirational figure without a structural position is spot on, because it shows he gets the party’s political desires. But he warns of the risk if Anies is only backed by a beginner party, which could lead to low votes if there are three candidate pairs. He also points out how rookie and ‘leftover’ candidates can be parasitic on Anies’s popularity, using it to snag seats but then switching to support other candidates. Damai suggests Anies demand a firm commitment from the newbie parties riding on his reputation.
