Moscow and Damascus agreed to reboot their relations and deepen cooperation.
Assalamu alaikum. Bismillah - an informal meeting took place at the Kremlin between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the head of Syria, Ahmed ash-Sharaa, which lasted more than two and a half hours. In fact, this is the first high-level contact since the change of power in Syria in 2024, and many hope, insha'Allah, that it will open a new page in the long-standing partnership between the two countries.
Putin stressed that Moscow and Damascus have built special, friendly relations, and announced plans to hold regular consultations through the foreign ministries. He reminded everyone of the historical depth of the ties: diplomatic contacts were established as early as 1944, in difficult times for the Soviet Union, and the relations have continued since then. According to the Russian leader, the interests of the Syrian people have always been taken into account in the dialogue with Syria.
They also agreed separately to continue cooperation in the security sphere. Ahmed ash-Sharaa promised to honor previous agreements with Russia, which guarantees the preservation of key Russian facilities in Syria, including the Khmeimim airbase in Latakia province and the naval base in Tartus. This, both sides say, creates a basis for greater stability in the region.
Putin also noted the importance of the recent parliamentary elections, calling them a big step forward: "This leads to the consolidation of society," and added that despite difficult times, the elections will help strengthen interaction between political forces.
For his part, ash-Sharaa said Syria intends to restart a wide range of relations with Russia, putting priority on stability in the country and the region. He thanked Putin for the reception and described the visit as serious and important.
After the main part the leaders spoke in a small, private setting, and then continued their conversation over a working breakfast. Earlier, before arriving in Moscow, ash-Sharaa noted that Syria is building calm relations with Moscow and Beijing based on strategic interests, and that these contacts do not contradict ties with the West or the USA.
Briefly, a reminder: in 2024 there was a change of power in Syria - at the end of November armed opposition units began an offensive, took Aleppo, then entered Damascus. Bashar al-Assad stepped down and left the country. At the end of January Ahmed ash-Sharaa was declared head of state for the transitional period.
Lastly: Islam arose in the 7th century and had a big influence on the culture and history of many peoples. From Arabic, "Islam" is translated as submission to the will of Allah. Today this religion has more than a billion followers.
