May Allaah have mercy on the victims of the Louisville cargo plane crash
As-salamu alaykum. I’m saddened to share what happened in Louisville: a UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport, causing a huge fire and many losses.
What we know so far:
- The MD-11 freighter, heading for Honolulu, went down just after departure, climbing only a short distance before crashing into an industrial area near the airport.
- Officials have confirmed at least 12 people have died, and more are unaccounted for; the governor said the death toll may rise. Eleven others were reported injured and are in hospital.
- The aircraft carried a large quantity of fuel, which fueled the massive fireball that spread through nearby businesses. Reports say the plane hit two companies near the airport and caused smaller explosions at a recycling facility.
- Surveillance footage and initial investigation indicate the left engine separated from the wing during the takeoff roll, and a fire began in the left wing area. The engine was later found on the ground at the airport.
- Investigators have recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders and will analyze them in Washington, DC. It’s still too early to know whether the failure began with the engine, its mount, or another part.
- The airport has reopened with at least one runway in use. Local authorities continue searching and assisting families; officials have urged that survivors are unlikely to be found.
Please make dua for the victims and their families - may Allaah grant them sabr and forgiveness. If you can, check on neighbors and offer help to anyone affected in the area. May Allaah protect everyone and make this a source of mercy for those who passed.
