M 7.4 Earthquake Shakes Colombia, At Least 21 Killed
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake shook western Colombia, killing at least 21 people and causing severe damage in several cities. The quake's epicenter was about 5 km east of San Jose del Palmar, at a depth of 107 km, according to USGS. It struck at 12:34 GMT.
In Pereira, Mayor Mauricio Salazar reported 18 deaths. Meanwhile, in Manizales, Mayor Jorge Eduardo Rojas said two people died and more than 32 buildings were damaged. In Quibdo, one person was reported dead. A number of airports, including those in Cali, Pereira, and Manizales, were closed for structural inspections.
President Abelardo De La Espriella said the state is present and taking action, including setting up a unified command post and monitoring the response directly to Pereira. There's no tsunami threat from this quake, but a magnitude 5.0 aftershock was recorded. The shaking was felt as far as Ecuador and Panama.
