Lebanese Singer Fadel Chaker Surrenders After Over 10 Years on the Run, Insha'Allah Justice Will Prevail
Fadel Chaker turned himself in to Lebanon’s military intelligence this past Saturday after more than ten years avoiding the authorities. He was wanted because of accusations linked to the 2013 clashes in Sidon. Once a popular singer, Fadel had stepped away from music in 2012, taking the name Hajj Chaker and pledging support to Lebanese Sunni cleric Ahmed al-Assir. This led him to join in armed conflict against the Lebanese army, a battle that sadly resulted in the loss of 18 soldiers’ lives. In 2020, Fadel was sentenced in his absence to 22 years of hard labor. He stayed hidden, reportedly in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp, a place difficult for Lebanese forces to enter because of old agreements. On Saturday evening, Lebanese military intelligence managed to take Fadel from one of the camp’s entrances. Officials shared that after talks involving mediators and the Defense Ministry, he decided to surrender. It is said his 22-year sentence might be dropped so he can face trial on new charges. Fadel has denied ever supporting violence during the Sidon clashes. His surrender comes at a time when the Lebanese army is working to collect weapons from Palestinian refugee camps, areas long beyond the government's control. Fadel had been mostly away from the public eye for years but made a comeback this year with new songs like Ahla Rasma, Elhob W Bass, Hawa Aljnoub, Rouh el Baher, and a duet with his son Mohamed called Kifek 3a Fra2e. These songs have gathered millions of views online. Before this return, he focused on recording Islamic hymns, starting with his 2018 single Shab’an Min Al Tamtheel. His comeback received mixed feelings; while some loved the music, others criticized it. For example, the Egyptian production company AG Group removed his song from a TV drama after public pushback. A documentary series called Ya Ghayeb … Fadel Chaker, featuring an interview where he shared his side, also got mixed reviews, with some accusing it of downplaying his past. Despite the controversy, many are drawn to his music, shown by the high numbers of his recent songs. Depending on how his legal matters turn out, he might have an opportunity for a more official return to music with concerts and promotions that could bring him back to the spotlight. May Allah guide all to justice and truth.
