King Abdullah II and UK Foreign Secretary Call for More Aid to Gaza
As-salamu alaykum. King Abdullah II of Jordan and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper talked about the urgent need to step up humanitarian assistance to Gaza and to make sure the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is upheld. The meeting in Amman, attended by Crown Prince Hussein, also looked at boosting cooperation between the two countries in trade, industry and defense.
The king warned about dangerous escalations against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and the disrespect shown to Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. He also stressed supporting Syria and Lebanon to preserve their security, stability and territorial integrity, and welcomed the UK’s move last September to recognize Palestinian statehood.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Director of the Royal Office Alaa Batayneh were also present.
In a related meeting, Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met with Vice Adm. Edward Ahlgren, the UK’s senior defense adviser for the Middle East and North Africa, to discuss military cooperation. They talked about regional developments and ways to strengthen Jordan’s military readiness through training, equipment and coordination. The UK team was briefed on regional security concerns, defense coordination, training exchanges, operational readiness in Jordan, and Jordan’s humanitarian and medical support for Gaza and the West Bank.
Senior Jordanian officers and the British defense attaché reviewed the progress of defense agreements and programs aimed at improving bilateral military planning and cooperation. May Allah grant safety and relief to those suffering in the region.
