Issue of Power Struggle in NasDem Party Linked to Surya Paloh's Business Conditions
The issue of a power struggle for control of the NasDem Party has resurfaced. Several politicians are reportedly attempting to take over leadership from Chairman Surya Paloh. This move is said to be related to the decline in Surya Paloh's business ventures after the party endorsed Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate for 2024. This maneuver involves various parties who see an opportunity amid Surya Paloh's weakened position post-election, with a possible shift towards courting the Prabowo Subianto administration.
Surya Paloh, the owner of Media Group, is said to have faced business pressures since NasDem declared Anies as its candidate in October 2022. A May 2023 report by Tempo Magazine stated that his business empire, including the catering sector, was allegedly disrupted due to strained relations with the government at the time. His real estate, hospitality, and mining businesses were also reportedly affected.
Following the 2024 Election, NasDem, which did not join the government coalition, finds itself increasingly in opposition. Surya Paloh has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to the 'movement for change' and called for party cadres to remain solid, focusing on the long-term agenda toward the 2029 Election. However, internal issues like the struggle for influence have occasionally surfaced in the media.
