Iran Pauses Nuclear Talks Following Renewed Sanctions – A Muslim Perspective
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Iran has announced that it currently has no plans to restart nuclear negotiations with European countries after facing renewed sanctions last month. The spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghaei, shared this update during a recent press briefing. He explained that Iran is concentrating on assessing the impact of actions taken by the UK, France, and Germany, who triggered the snapback sanctions at the United Nations. Mr. Baghaei described the current diplomatic efforts with these countries as unproductive, suggesting their move was mainly to please the United States. These UN sanctions were reinstated in September due to concerns from Western nations about Iran not fully complying with the 2015 nuclear agreement. The deal was intended to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons by providing certain incentives. However, after the US withdrew from the agreement in 2018, Iran did not follow all the agreed terms. The three European countries began the process to bring back sanctions in August, claiming Iran was not upholding its commitments. This snapback mechanism has resulted in restrictions that could further challenge Iran's already struggling economy. Iran has warned that if sanctions return, it might halt cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Recently, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that continued cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog is no longer relevant, referencing an earlier agreement (the Cairo agreement) that is now considered obsolete. Last month, Iran and the IAEA had agreed to resume inspections of Iran's nuclear sites, including those previously targeted by attacks. This agreement was reached after talks hosted in Cairo by the Egyptian Foreign Minister and was meant to pave the way for inspectors to return, pending further discussions. Mr. Araghchi mentioned that the role of the three European countries in future nuclear discussions has lessened due to the sanctions, noting that their attempts to use the snapback mechanism have complicated diplomacy rather than helped it. He said these countries have lost their justification for negotiations and will likely have a smaller role moving forward. May Allah guide all parties to peaceful and fair resolutions that benefit the Ummah and maintain justice. Ameen.
