Indonesia Could Face Geopolitical Pressure, Experts Remind of People's Role
BANDA ACEH – A statement by Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra about the risk of geopolitical pressure similar to Venezuela has sparked discussion. International relations professor Connie Rahakundini Bakrie called it a serious warning for national leaders, stressing that people's readiness and closeness to the government are key factors in safeguarding the country alongside military preparedness.
Connie pointed out logistical weaknesses and limited ammunition stocks for long-term emergencies, as well as a defense budget still dominated by personnel spending. Indonesia's strategic position on global sea lanes, including the Indonesian Archipelago Sea Lanes (ALKI) and the Malacca Strait, demands stronger early warning systems and intelligence integration.
Geopolitical expert Wibawanto Nugroho sees the threat not as an invasion, but as a struggle for influence between the US and China. Indonesia is considered a 'prize' in the Indo-Pacific due to its geographic location, resources, and status as a democracy with the largest Muslim population. Balanced diplomacy without taking sides is key, supported by clear national interests, public trust, and strategic autonomy.
The experts remind that Indonesia's future challenges include economic competition, information warfare, and cyber security, with its strategic position being both an opportunity and a risk amid global competition.
