Grand Egyptian Museum opens near the Pyramids - a moment of pride, alhamdulillah
Assalamu alaikum - After decades of work, the Grand Egyptian Museum will finally open its doors on Saturday with a special ceremony on the Giza plateau, just 2 km from the Great Pyramids. The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities described the night as one to remember, and many of us feel this is a moment of national pride, alhamdulillah.
The museum displays over 50,000 artefacts, including the full treasures from the tomb of King Tutankhamun, plus striking architectural features that have impressed archaeologists and visitors. Some parts have already been open to the public since last year.
Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the building takes inspiration from Pharaonic forms with chambered pyramid shapes and lines up with the Great Pyramid of Khufu. Inside, highlights include a huge statue of Ramses II in the atrium, a hanging obelisk for the same king, and a “Journey to Eternity” stairway flanked by statues of gods and pharaohs.
Many who have waited years for this opening will see it as both celebration and reflection. Former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass recalled the original vision and the memorable move of the colossal Ramses II statue to its new place - moments that stay with Egyptians.
The event has attracted congratulations from ambassadors and praise from archaeologists worldwide. In the run-up to the opening, the Giza area has been busy: thousands of workers helped fix roads and buildings, repaint streets, plant trees and install signs to welcome visitors. Security has been increased and some areas will be closed during the opening night, but public screens have been set up so people across the governorate can follow the ceremony.
Officials say preparations are on track. While the guest list is not public, reports suggest many world leaders will attend, showing the global importance of the museum. After the ceremony there will be private tours for dignitaries and invited guests, and the museum will open to the public on November 4, insha'Allah.
The museum is expected to boost tourism - Egypt has already seen strong visitor numbers this year, and authorities predict the museum could raise arrivals further. Nearby hotels are full and travel agents report a surge in bookings from people eager to see the new site.
The Grand Egyptian Museum also includes a modern restoration centre that visitors can tour, where specialists show preservation work from stabilising papyrus to restoring massive statues.
The project began in 1992 and faced delays, including the pandemic and regional instability, but parts have been open since 2024 and the official opening will reveal more galleries and exhibits. The crown jewel remains the Tutankhamun galleries, with the boy king’s golden mask, chariots and throne shown together.
For many Egyptians and Muslims who value our shared history, this opening is a source of pride and gratitude to Allah for bringing this vision to life. May it be a benefit for knowledge, culture and respectful engagement with the past.
