Governor Herman Deru Pushes Sharia Economy as Growth Engine for South Sumatra
South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru emphasized that the sharia economy should become a new driver for inclusive and competitive regional economic growth. He said this at the 2026 Sumatra Regional Sharia Economic Festival (FESyar) in Palembang on Saturday (6/6/2026).
South Sumatra has a Muslim population of around 90 percent, but the use of sharia financial services is still not optimal. Herman Deru encourages increased literacy and public acceptance through outreach and education from an early age.
He stressed that sharia principles aren't just a label, but rather a economic behavior that's honest, transparent, and beneficial. The young generation is invited to understand and develop this sector.
Herman Deru also outlined South Sumatra's development achievements, such as the second highest economic growth in Sumatra, inflation control, and regional financial digitalization, as well as the strategic project of building a seaport.
