Dream of the Desert: a new five-star train bringing Saudi landscapes to life - Assalamu alaikum
Assalamu alaikum - An Italian design firm has revealed more about Saudi Arabia’s ultra-luxury train, Dream of the Desert, during the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh.
Presented as the first five-star train in the region, Dream of the Desert is scheduled to launch next year. Arsenale Group says the train will have 31 private suites plus two presidential suites, with capacity for up to 66 guests.
There will be two dining cars and a majlis lounge decorated with finely carved wood, desert-inspired colours and golden details that echo Saudi heritage. The restaurants will serve local dishes alongside international plates with Italian fusion touches, crafted by internationally acclaimed chefs.
“Dream of the Desert is a moving masterpiece born from the dialogue between Italian craftsmanship and Saudi vision,” said Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale Group. He added the train aims to redefine ultra-luxury travel while taking discerning guests through the heart of Saudi Arabia’s scenery and traditions.
The project was developed in partnership with Saudi Arabia Railways, the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services, the Transport General Authority, the Ministry of Culture and the Saudi Tourism Authority.
Planned to begin service at the end of 2026, the train will travel from Riyadh along about 1,300 km of existing lines, stopping at sites chosen to highlight Saudi Arabia’s most impressive landscapes and destinations. Stops will include UNESCO World Heritage sites and “another extraordinary hidden destination” to be announced later.
Guests can pick one- or two-night journeys with on-board and off-board experiences such as guided excursions, private performances and personalised services.
Lebanon-born architect and designer Aline Asmar d’Amman of Culture in Architecture studio designed the interiors. The décor will pay tribute to Saudi and Italian design traditions with textured materials, reinterpreted textile weavings and rich wood carvings.
“The interiors celebrate the majesty of the kingdom’s landscapes, with references to architectural heritage and the sweeping desert,” the company said.
Overall, the train looks set to offer a luxury travel option that blends regional culture with international design - a promising addition for visitors and residents who wish to explore Saudi Arabia in comfort and style.
