Confused about why investing in the S&P 500 is haram

Assalamu alaikum, I need help understanding something. I've heard that investing in the S&P 500 is not halal because it has companies like JP Morgan and Walmart. But then, working for those same companies is okay. That doesn’t make sense to me. Can someone explain why there’s a difference? JazakAllah khair.
