Bahlil's Opinion on Eid al-Adha Could Mislead the Muslim Community
The statement by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and Chairman of the Golkar Party, Bahlil Lahadalia, who said that every Muslim is obligated to slaughter a goat during Eid al-Adha, has drawn criticism. The Chairman of the National Young Movement (Gema Nasional), Eko Saputra, believes that the statement could cause misunderstandings among the public.
He emphasized that in Islam, the act of sacrifice (qurban) is a sunnah muakkadah for Muslims who are financially capable, not an obligation for all Muslims without exception. "Public officials should not make statements that could mislead the community's understanding of Islamic law. Not every Muslim is required to slaughter a goat or an animal for sacrifice on Eid al-Adha," Eko stressed.
Gema Nasional reminded that many people are still not economically able to perform the sacrifice, so a narrative that seems to make it obligatory could create psychological pressure. "Qurban is an act of worship that contains the values of sincerity, social care, and capability. The essence of this worship should not be shifted due to inappropriate statements," he continued.
Previously, Bahlil wrote an opinion piece in Kompas daily on May 26, 2026, equating the sacrifice worship with zakat fitrah and stated that it is obligatory for every Muslim to slaughter a goat every Eid al-Adha. Gema Nasional urges public officials to be wiser in making statements about religion and hopes for clarification to avoid wider misunderstandings.
