At least 11 killed as Russia strikes homes and energy sites in Ukraine - As-salamu alaykum
As-salamu alaykum. Ukraine is urging more sanctions and asset freezes on Russia while it faces intensified attacks and prepares for another harsh winter of war.
At least 11 people have been killed and more areas plunged into darkness after a night of heavy Russian strikes across the country, local officials say, even as diplomatic efforts to end the nearly four-year conflict stall.
Ukraine’s military reported hundreds of Russian drones and missiles launched from air, land and sea targeting critical infrastructure - a common Kremlin tactic as winter approaches. The air force detected 503 air attacks overnight, including 45 missiles and 458 drones. Most missiles got past defences, with only nine shot down, while 406 drones were intercepted.
The assaults focused largely on gas and power systems, causing outages in several regions. In frontline Zaporizhzhia, Governor Ivan Fedorov said three people were killed and six wounded after strikes hit multiple districts and a residential building. Two people were killed in parts of Donetsk, and Kherson’s governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported two dead and 10 injured after apartment blocks, private homes and vehicles were hit.
Kyiv’s governor Mykola Kalashnyk said an attack in Vyshhorod injured a woman and damaged civilian and energy infrastructure. In the eastern Dnipro region, a strike on a building left at least three dead and 11 wounded, including children. Poltava’s governor Volodymyr Kohut said a “massive” strike there injured one person and has forced rolling blackouts to cope with damaged power lines.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for tougher EU sanctions and asset freezes against Russia before winter, saying the attacks show pressure must increase. He noted that Russian nuclear energy and parts of the military-industrial supply chain still aren’t fully sanctioned and urged more measures on oil and gas trade.
Russia’s defence ministry said it launched a “massive strike with high-precision long-range weapons” from air, land and sea, including hypersonic missiles, and claimed it shot down some Ukrainian drones and guided bombs.
Fierce house-to-house fighting is reported in Pokrovsk in Donetsk, where heavy fighting continues as Russian forces press to seize more ground. Ukraine’s top general Oleksandr Syrskii said Ukrainian troops are stepping up counterattacks near Dobropillia to relieve pressure on Pokrovsk.
May Allah protect the innocent and bring relief to those suffering. Please keep the victims and their families in your duas.
