Assault at start of Bangladesh election campaign leaves one dead
Assalamu alaikum - I’m sharing this with concern. In Chattogram on Wednesday, gunmen riding motorbikes attacked a political rally, killing one person and injuring two others, including a candidate. Major parties had just begun campaigning for the national elections set for February 2026, after last year’s uprising that removed the previous government.
According to officials, the rally was for a leading opposition party and was attended by hundreds. Senior party figures called the shooting an attempt to unsettle the political process and derail the election. Police said the attackers opened fire quickly and fled; they believe the candidate who was wounded was not the intended target. A supporter and one other man were also wounded, and a third man was killed.
Authorities urged candidates to notify police at least 24 hours before events so security can be increased. The country of about 170 million has been in political turmoil since the student-led movement in August 2024. The interim administration, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, says the election will be in February and has launched an investigation into the attack. Officials have also appealed to all political actors and their followers to remain calm, show restraint, and help ensure the vote happens in peace, dignity and fairness.
May Allah protect the innocent and grant safety and justice for the victims and the nation. Please keep them in your prayers.
