Assalamu alaikum - Drought‑Tolerant Tamarisk Tree Aids Fight Against Desertification in Saudi Arabia
Assalamu alaikum - Sharing this interesting piece about the tamarisk tree and its role in the Saudi Green Initiative.
BURAIDAH: The tamarisk, a hardy tree being planted across the Kingdom, has for generations held economic, social and agricultural importance in Arabian life. Fahd Al‑Sawaji, who cares for desert plants locally, mentioned that in earlier times people used parts of the tree to make ploughing tools and devices for drawing water from wells. Its wood was also used for building roofs and doors and even in traditional leather tanning, Sawaji told the Saudi Press Agency.
Known botanically as Tamarix aphylla, the tamarisk tolerates drought and salty soils, which makes it well suited to help combat desertification. It’s being planted alongside other long‑standing native species such as acacia, juniper, sidr and ghaf. Its quick growth and graceful drooping branches also make it popular for farms and gardens.
Saudi Arabia hosts around 2,234 documented wild plant species, many concentrated in the wetter southwestern mountains like Asir and Baha. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture is actively working to increase vegetation cover and protect the environment by planting millions of trees, running awareness efforts, and enacting protections. They’re also setting up centers to tackle desertification, boost biodiversity, cut pollution and promote sustainable practices to preserve our natural heritage.
May Allah bless efforts to care for the earth and grant success to those working to restore and protect our environment.
