As-salamu alaykum - Three dead, dozens missing after migrant boats sink off Italy
As-salamu alaykum. Heartbreaking news from the central Mediterranean: a boat carrying about 35 people from Libya capsized off Lampedusa, leaving one confirmed dead and around two dozen unaccounted for, UNICEF’s Italy coordinator said.
Rescuers from the Italian Coast Guard pulled 11 people from the water on Friday, including four unaccompanied children, and recovered the body of a pregnant woman, according to Nicola Dell’Arciprete. The survivors and the body were taken to Lampedusa, while many others are still missing. The vessel had been at sea for two days before it overturned.
In a separate incident on Sunday, Italian authorities found two dead migrants and 14 others in critical condition after intercepting a boat carrying 85 people from Pakistan, Eritrea and Somalia, the AGI news agency reported. The injured and the deceased were transferred to Coast Guard vessels about 16 nautical miles off Lampedusa and then brought ashore to hospitals.
UN data show this is part of a tragic pattern: since 2014 more than 32,700 migrants have died trying to cross the Mediterranean, and about one in five of them were children. Officials say at least 916 migrants have already died in the central Mediterranean in 2025 alone.
May Allah have mercy on the deceased and grant patience to their families. Please keep these people in your duas and consider supporting reputable relief groups helping migrants and refugees.
