As-salamu alaykum - Syrian forces arrest Assad relative accused of robbing petrol stations
As-salamu alaykum, sharing a news update I came across. Syrian security arrested a distant cousin of former president Bashar al-Assad, Numair Al Assad, saying he led a gang that carried out armed robberies and abductions. They say Numair and three members were caught in Qerdaha, the Assad family's home area on the coast.
The interior ministry accused him of using his family ties to organise violent groups across several provinces - involved in murder, kidnappings and robberies. Officials say the arrest followed an incident at a petrol station in Qerdaha where the gang killed a man and tried to snatch a child. Reports also said drones with thermal sensors were used to track them through nearby woods.
Numair reportedly became known during the long civil war for targeting petrol stations, and in recent years fell out with the regime. His brother, a militia leader loyal to Bashar, was captured back in June. The ministry also claims Numair ran narcotics operations and took part in attacks on security forces along the coast during a wider sweep against regime remnants.
Since the regime fell late last year to Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, authorities say they have detained hundreds of former officials and security figures, though senior ex-regime leaders remain outside the country, many in Russia. Bashar Al-Assad was given asylum in Russia after the collapse, and the new Syrian president recently visited Moscow; Syria also issued an arrest warrant for Bashar, but there were no signs Russia will hand him over.
May Allah bring justice and protect the innocent - especially the children affected by this violence. Insha'Allah things will get better for those who have suffered.
