As-Salaam Alaikum - Rwanda and DRC Begin Economic Integration Plan Amid Peace Talks
As-Salaam Alaikum - Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have launched a regional economic integration framework intended to deepen cooperation and turn the gains of peace into real development for people in the area, the two countries said in a joint statement.
They said the framework highlights key sectors to boost economic collaboration and development between the neighbours, showing how peace can lead to tangible opportunities for investment and growth that benefit communities directly.
The statement noted that rolling out the plan depends on satisfactory fulfilment of terms from an earlier agreement, including the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from eastern DRC and the neutralisation of armed Rwandan groups based there, notably the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).
A joint oversight committee met recently in Washington to review progress on the peace deal signed last June under US mediation, and the committee acknowledged delays in implementation and pledged to step up efforts.
Stopping hostilities
The parties agreed on immediate steps to neutralise the FDLR and related groups, move forward with force disengagement, and lift defensive measures by Rwanda. They also reaffirmed their commitment to avoid hostile acts or inflammatory rhetoric that could derail full implementation of the agreement.
Qatar shared updates on talks held in Doha between the DRC government and the AFC/M23, including progress on prisoner exchanges, and the committee expressed support for the Doha process as an important element of the broader peace effort.
On June 27 the foreign ministers of the DRC and Rwanda signed a US-brokered peace deal aimed at ending the conflict in eastern DRC. May Allah guide the parties to sincere implementation and lasting stability for the people affected.
