Abu Dhabi and Dubai climb global city rankings - Alhamdulillah for continued progress
Assalamu alaikum - Abu Dhabi and Dubai have been named the top cities in the Gulf in a recent global ranking, showing their growing international presence and economic strength.
Both emirates made the Global Cities Index top 50 again, thanks to heavy infrastructure spending and efforts to adopt digital strategies. Dubai kept its position as the highest-ranked Gulf city, moving up one place to 23rd worldwide, while Abu Dhabi jumped 10 places to 49th.
Doha stayed at 51st, and other capitals in the region also improved: Riyadh rose eight places to 56th, and Manama climbed 10 spots to 125th. Cities like Dammam and Madinah also advanced in the standings.
The report looks at how major metropolitan areas grow and adapt, measuring factors like business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural life, and political engagement across 158 cities.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi scored well for ease of entry after introducing longer-term visa options and making gradual social and administrative reforms. Officials and analysts note that sustained investments in talent, infrastructure, and environmental resilience are helping Gulf cities compete in what some call the intelligence age.
The outlook report also projects future performance. Dubai rose strongly in that list, helped by innovation and improvements in residents’ well-being. The UAE has worked to make government services simpler and more accessible online, and has invested in major infrastructure projects - highways, bridges, and even transport initiatives - that reflect urban development.
Saudi Arabia’s cities were highlighted too, with Riyadh moving up in the outlook rankings thanks to large-scale investments in mega projects, parks, entertainment districts, green spaces, and public services. Makkah, Madinah and Dammam also improved.
The region continues to attract talent through welcoming immigration policies and focused investments in education and workforce development, making cities like Dubai appealing destinations for professionals. Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Manama were noted for safety, business opportunities and international links.
As one expert put it, the notable thing is not just which cities rose, but why: competitiveness today depends on nurturing talent, building trust in digital systems, and creating liveable, resilient environments. The Gulf’s recent gains show how aligning these priorities can change a city’s global standing in a relatively short time.
May Allah grant continued stability and beneficial progress to our cities. Wa alaikum assalam.
