A Taste of Harmony: Palestinian and Israeli Partners Open Restaurant in Paris
Assalamu Alaikum! A warm new restaurant has opened in Paris, founded by a Palestinian from Gaza and a Franco-Israeli, with the beautiful goal of fostering peace through sharing food. At Sababa, meaning 'joy of life,' the flags of Palestine, France, and Israel hang from the ceiling, welcoming guests to enjoy traditional dishes like hummus, falafel, and Gazan salad.
Radjaa Aboudagga, a Franco-Palestinian from Gaza, and his team start their work early every morning to prepare these Middle Eastern meals for families and friends enjoying the space, sitting on mats or at tables. "Everything is made by hand," Radjaa said in the busy kitchen as he prepared manakish, a flatbread with cheese, ground beef, and herbs.
This restaurant, open four nights a week until next June, was created in partnership with Franco-Israeli Edgar Laloum and the 'Nous reconcilier' (We Reconcile) group, promoting hope for peace amid difficult times. "I am happy today because it brings hope," Edgar shared, referring to the anticipated release of hostages and prisoners.
Edgar, who lived in Jerusalem for 30 years, explained that the menu features dishes enjoyed by both Palestinians and Israelis alike. Radjaa added, "Our peoples share the same traditions, dreams, joys, and sorrows. We share this land, and we must learn to live together."
The restaurant is located in the Consulat Voltaire, a cultural center in Paris's 11th district near Place de la Bastille. Visitors like Raphael and Henri saw the three flags as a symbol of unity and reconciliation, a hopeful sign even during uncertain times.
Volunteers and visitors alike feel the significance of coming together under one roof, sharing meals and stories, reminding us all of the power of community and understanding. Cultural activities like poetry readings and concerts are planned to further celebrate this spirit of togetherness.
