Why Killing One Life is Like Killing All of Humanity? Here's the Reason in Islam
Murder cases accompanied by mutilation have happened again in Indonesia, showing how terrifying it is when the value of human life loses respect. In Islam, human life is a trust from Allah SWT that has a very high status and must be protected. The Qur'an describes the gravity of the sin of taking one life without a justified reason: “Whoever kills a human being, not because that person (killed) another, or because of causing corruption in the land, it is as if he has killed all humankind.” (QS. Al-Maidah [5]: 32).
Protection of life is part of the fundamental objectives of Islamic law. Imam Syathibi in Al-Muwafaqat mentions five essential needs that the sharia protects, namely religion, life, honor, property, and lineage. Murder in Islam is classified as a major sin, with severe threats from the Qur'an and hadith. QS. an-Nisa’ [4]: 93 mentions the punishment of hell for someone who intentionally kills a believer, while the Prophet SAW said that the loss of the world is lighter in the sight of Allah than the killing of a Muslim without right.
Islam doesn’t just provide moral prohibition, but also offers legal mechanisms like qishash and diyat to bring justice and prevent killing. QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 178-179 emphasizes the obligation of qishash and its wisdom as a guarantee for the continuity of life. Qishash is not merely punishment, but also social protection by ensuring accountability for the perpetrator and a deterrent effect.
Cases of murder and mutilation should serve as a reminder that respect for human life must be upheld together. In Islam, one life is not just a number, but a trust that carries honor and consequences of accountability in this world and before Allah SWT.
