When Did We Stray as an Ummah? A Heartfelt Reflection
Bismillah, I’m sharing this with a heavy heart, so please forgive me if my words seem harsh-I just need to let this out and hear your thoughts. May Allah guide us all. I’ve been thinking about where we’ve fallen short as a community, and it’s weighing on me. Let me lay out what’s troubling my heart: 1. So many of our brothers and sisters shut down any discussion with “this is how it is” without room for understanding. We’ve lost the ability to handle nuance, and it’s exhausting. 2. Where are the Muslims in positions of leadership and influence? We’re barely making a dent in shaping society. 3. Honestly, a lot of us are just drifting through life without real purpose or direction. 4. We obsess over tiny details-like whether saying a certain word is haram-instead of focusing on what truly matters. Islam was meant to ease our souls, but we’ve turned it into a heavy chain around them. 5. Our elders and scholars once excelled in sciences, math, and deep intellectual debate. Now, many among us lack proper education and critical thinking. 6. The world sees us in a terrible light, especially when it comes to how women are treated and protected. This breaks my heart. 7. Most Muslim countries are ruled by puppets, extremists, or corrupt leaders-there’s no stability or justice. I could keep going, but I’ll stop here. I just needed to vent, and I pray I haven’t spoken out of line. What do you all think? This hadith keeps echoing in my mind, and it feels truer than ever: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The nations will soon summon one another against you, just as people invite one another to share their dish." They asked, "Will that be because we are few?" He ﷺ said, "No, you will be many, but you will be like the foam on a flood. Allah will remove the fear of you from your enemies’ hearts and place wahn in yours." They asked, "What is wahn?" He ﷺ said, "Love of the world and hatred of death."
