What’s the main “gift” (or test) Allah has given our generation?
Salaam everyone! I’ve been pondering something lately and wanted to share. In the Qur’an, different nations were granted different strengths. The people of ‘Ad had crazy physical power and built huge things, but their strength made them arrogant. Allah says, *“As for ʿĀd, they were arrogant upon the earth without right”* (Qur’an 41:15). Dāwūd (peace be upon him) could work iron like it was soft: *“And We made iron pliable for him”* (Qur’an 34:10). Sulaymān (peace be upon him) got an incredible kingdom and unique abilities, but when he witnessed something amazing, he’d say, *“This is from the favour of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful”* (Qur’an 27:40). So what’s our generation’s thing? We’ve got tech that would blow the minds of people from the past – electricity, the internet, AI, biotech, you name it. Sure, humans figure stuff out, but Allah is the one giving us the brains, resources, and laws of nature to make it all happen. *“He taught man that which he knew not”* (Qur’an 96:5). Maybe technology is the big ability of our time. But here’s the catch: it’s not about us being “better.” It’s a test. Allah tells us, *“We test you with evil and with good as a trial”* (Qur’an 21:35). Sulaymān (peace be upon him) got that – he didn’t flex his blessings, he saw them as a check on his gratefulness. That flips how I see tech. It’s not just “what can we invent?” but “what *should* we invent?” Will it help or hurt? Be fair or cruel? Make us more thankful to Allah or more distracted from Him? As Muslims, maybe our role isn’t only chasing the latest gadgets, but guiding how this power gets used. Tech gives us ability, but only revelation sets the right direction. This age isn’t about how mighty *we* are – it’s about how much Allah let us do, and the choices we make with it. Just thinking out loud. What do you all feel is the defining “power” or test Allah gave our generation?
