Welcoming the Islamic New Year 1448 H, Here’s a Sin-Eraising Practice from Gus Baha
Muslims are welcoming the Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1448 H, which falls on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. KH Ahmad Bahauddin Nursalim (Gus Baha) recommends a special practice for the night marking the new year: the Salat Tasbih prayer and increasing dhikr. According to him, this practice is unique because it absolutely erases sins through the phrase of tasbih, without needing to seek forgiveness (istighfar).
This recommendation is based on a hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH in the book I’anatuth Thalibin, narrated by Ibn Abbas RA. The Messenger offered forgiveness of sins to Abbas bin Abdul Muthalib through a four-rak’ah prayer, reciting Al-Fatihah and one surah in each rak’ah. Gus Baha stresses that the turn of the year is a perfect time to put it into practice.
The method for Salat Tasbih is done in 4 rak’ahs with two salams, totalling 300 tasbihs. In each rak’ah, the tasbih is recited 75 times: 15 times after Al-Fatihah and the surah, 10 times while bowing (ruku’), 10 times while standing after bowing (i’tidal), 10 times in the first prostration, 10 times sitting between the two prostrations, 10 times in the second prostration, and 10 times while sitting briefly to rest before standing.
In addition, scholars recommend other practices in the month of Muharram, such as fasting on Tasu’a and Ashura, maintaining family ties, giving charity, performing a ritual bath, visiting scholars, visiting the sick, increasing household spending, caring for orphans, and reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas 1,000 times. This moment serves as a chance for spiritual reflection and attaining blessings.
