Virgo Transport 8 Ship Loses Contact in the Java Sea, 243 People Being Searched For
The Virgo Transport 8 ship was reported missing after losing contact while sailing from Surabaya to Banjarmasin on Sunday (13/9/2026). The vessel, which was carrying 243 people, was last known to be in the waters of the Java Sea, about 80 nautical miles from the Basirih SAR Dock in Banjarmasin.
The Banjarmasin Class A Search and Rescue Office received a report from the General Manager of PT Virgo at 04:10 WITA. The ship is believed to have faced bad weather before contact was lost around 02:00 WITA. A rescue team of six personnel was immediately dispatched to the last estimated location using KN SAR Laksmana 241.
SAR Mission Coordinator I Putu Sudayana stated that the search is being carried out optimally, involving various elements like the KSOP, Naval Base, Marine Police, and other related agencies. A bunch of equipment-like water rescue gear, diving equipment, and Starlink-has been prepared to support the operation. Weather conditions in the search area are being continuously monitored.
